In the Glass

The Story

Te Kano began with a love of both a place and a person. Californian-born Rhonda Lloyd fell in love with a New Zealander and then with Central Otago’s extraordinary landscape. The family chose a name meaning ‘the seed’ in Māori, expressing an ambition to build a wine estate that would give something back to the land.

This Pinot Noir puts that philosophy into a glass: generous berry fruit tempered by the freshness, herbs and mineral detail that make Central Otago such a distinctive home for the grape.

The Producer

The Lloyd family developed vineyards across Central Otago and North Otago, pairing winegrowing with a major native-plant regeneration project. At Northburn, former gold-mining workings and land once burned for grazing are being restored alongside new vineyard plantings.

The Te Kano cellar door on Felton Road is as individual as the wine: architects Mason & Wales designed a structure using repurposed shipping containers, with the building cantilevered above the Kawarau River.

Place & Terroir

Te Kano’s Eliza Vineyard straddles an alluvial terrace between Felton Road and the Kawarau River. Silt and clay give way to river gravels, producing supple Pinot Noir with generous dark cherry fruit. Nearby Jerome contributes firmer structure; the Northburn site adds a broad range of gravel, schist and clay-influenced conditions.

That diversity matters for the Life Series wines: the estate can blend contrasting textures and fruit characters while keeping the clear identity of Central Otago.

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck, mushroom risotto, herb-roasted chicken or pork tenderloin.

Serve lightly cool, around 15–17°C; avoid warming the glass above room temperature.

Worth Knowing

At Northburn, Te Kano propagates native kōwhai trees from seeds gathered from an ancient survivor of the gold-mining landscape: an unusually literal expression of the winery name, the seed.
